The Cape Romano Dome House
Wednesday, March 11, 2009
Cape Romano is at the southern end of Caxambas Island which is located just south of Marco Island and northwest of the 10,000 Islands in the Everglades. This undeveloped Florida shoreline can only be accessed by boat. Well, I say it's undeveloped but someone obviously tried at one point in time. It's obviously a bad idea to attempt to build a house on a cape with forever shifting sand.
History - A real estate development company sold about 47 lots on Caxambas Island in the 1960's. A lot of people bought these lots thinking that this would become a popular destination. The family who owns the Dome House owns 5 of these lots. The other 42 have either washed into the gulf or are now owned by the state.
If you view this area on Google maps, you'll notice lots of sandbars and troughs along it's shoreline. This makes for a very interesting, photogenic and great fishing area!
